Pretty good night

Though it had been sleeting/snowing all evening, I had an incredibly pleasant ride home the other night. The temperature was about right considering my quick pace, no sweating, cool and comfortable. My fixie was running smooth and felt like it was flying over the sleek, carless streets, which had a nice reflective sheen from the freshly falling and melting snow and...OBAMA DECISIVELY WON THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES!!!

Liberalism? Conservatism? We can FINALLY talk seriously about them again, and though I wave a progressive banner, I respect aspects of conservative thought. One of my very best friends is an unflinching, self-describing independent conservative. Between the two of us, he's probably the more frustrated while discussing what has been done in the name of the party he grew up with; when he says 'fiscal responsibility' he actually means it. I respect his opinion and his logical capacity better than most others I know, and he stood right next to me last night and nodded while America decisively turned a corner in many many respects.

We stood next to each other; friends and patriots, with differing ideological backgrounds, and watched history unfold as our country stepped forward into an uncertain future. I used to think I wanted a Progressive Democrat to win this election in order that I can see my country move beyond the disaster of George W. Bush and his insane brand of Ideological Lunacy. Now, I realize all I've really wanted is for my fellows in this nation to stand side by side again.

Incidentally, if you want to know how my friend voted, you'd have to ask him. I will say that when he described it to me, it changed my perspective on voting a bit. I used to simply think that we should all exercise this 'right to vote' and decried the fact that most of us don't. The other night I talked to someone who put real, serious, thought into it, which is our true 'civic duty'.

Nice work America.

Bad-ass-mutha in Chief.
